4 Things A Leader Must Do

Here are FOUR things are leader must do:

  1. Talkabout your vision, values, goals and strategy A LOT; as in every meeting. I’m not sure it’s possible for a leader to spend too much time on these. It’s not possible for a team to stay properly motivated unless they clearly understand, as a team, what they are working to achieve. Sure, money and benefits will help, but to truly have sustaining motivation, it must be grounded in where you are going and how you will get there.
  2. Seize opportunities. Opportunities should be viewed as precious assets. They must be leveraged at their fullest. You can’t afford to waste them. Just as if you wouldn’t leave a valuable piece of property not making money, you don’t want to let opportunities sit or pass you buy.
  3. Take Responsibility. This means that EVERYTHING is your fault and NOTHING good happened because of you. This doesn’t mean that you don’t hold people accountable. It means that accountability begins and ends with you.
  4. Spend most of your time at 10,000 feet. Sure, jump down into the weeds to work alongside the team where it’s appropriate. They may need your direction and guidance on specific issues. But you’re job is to drive the boat, not clean the decks.
